Those that know me, know I love numbers. When I came stumbling upon the Mocorunning.com website, and saw they were using a mathematical formula to come up with xc rankings - one in which had no opinions what so ever used. I thought it would be fun to try and do it for Carroll County. Turns out they got this formula from RunWV.com. It's a neat formula, and obviously any ranking system will have it's flaws, but at least there is no guess work involved with this one. I asked them if we could use it, and they allowed us. So we are going to try it this year. Please note though, it is completely based on performances vs ranked opponents of results we receive. To read how the formula works, go to this website: www.errun.org/XCRankingsFormula.aspUsing the formula, I came up with the "pre-season" rankings. It's not perfect, and it's meant to be fun, and a motivator for anybody and everybody. Remember, rankings mean nothing, unless you can prove it on the course. If I get a lot of hate mail, I will just remove it and stop them altogether. Girls: No surprise who #1 was, Katie Hursey takes the top spot, but who is number 2? www.errun.org/CarrollCounty2006XCRankingsGirls.aspBoys: This one was a lot closer, probably because nobody was the top county runner at every race last year. The top 3 are very close, and these should mix up a lot as the year goes on. www.errun.org/CarrollCounty2006XCRankingsBoys.asp

This is a pretty cool way of ranking things... It seems pretty fair and it will definitley help limit the arguing over who is better then who.

Will these rankings start clean once the season actually starts, or are they just going to continue from the preseason rankings.

They get adjusted with each meet that is run. So slowly they will reflect how the season goes.

Well I'm going to have to be the one to put the hypothetical question out there...Let's say that someone unranked has just done some incredible summer running and goes into the first meet and runs a 16:00. Since that is 3:30 (210 seconds) faster than the 19:30 cutoff, would they get 420 points? I know there are a lot of rules about if runner a runs xx:xx and runner b runs yy:yy their points cancel out, but I'm really not awake enough right now to try to logic it.

Time is irrelevant. It is based on how you do against ranked runners. If said runner beats ranked runners in a race, that would get him ranked based on the rules. The 19:30 is only based off the County Championships when first creating the pre-season poll.
It is set up this way to protect against somebody running on a fast course (like Boonsboro or Libertytown) and running a excessively fast time compared to someone running in a meet at Hereford or SC.
There is also only so many points a runner can gain in a single meet. One "break-out" race won't give you the number one ranking, you have to show consistency. It could also be the fact that teams train through a meet, but one athlete decided to take it easy leading to the meet and thats the only reason why they ran better then their respective competition.

I didnt really want to start a new topic to ask this question and it may be a bit out of place, but does any one know if Colin Fearns is running xc this year?

The two meets yesterday main effect on the rankings for the girls was the addition of 4 runners:
Catherine Robinson, SC Shannon Smith, Liberty Michele Lambert, Liberty Emily Russell, FSK

Rankings are updated heading into today's Westminster Invite. A lot should change after this invite - high point value potential since the whole county will be there.

OK I'm confused with these rankings already. The ranking for Catherine Robinson, a SC freshman, seem unchanged at 40 points after the HoCo Invite. Yet another freshman, Kirsten McGovern from Century, is at 140 points, but only finished 24 seconds ahead of Robinson.
Can this be explained?
Thanks

Well, there are a few reasons for this:
#1 - 24 seconds is 48 points in the system.
#2 - this was the second meet for Robinson, but the first for McGovern. Robinson based on the formula didn't lose or gain any points (based on how she did against other ranked runnres). Since it was McGoverns first race, she gets entered based on base time and how much faster she was then that.
