We are once again going to do the Meet Most Valuable Runners for any meet involving at least 2 teams from the county. In review, this is how it works:
After each meet, I will post one boy and one girl as runner of the Meet Most Valuable Runner from Carroll County. I will also name a couple honorable Mention.
When multiple teams from the county attend a meet, with multiple ranked runners in the race, I will name a "Meet Most Valuable Runner" for Carroll County and post it on the message board and the Carroll County Running Home Page.
How will the Meet Most Valuable Runner be decided? The boy and girl that had the biggest point increase in the rankings will be that meets runner of the meet. This isn't a perfect system (cause some athletes are still establishing themselves) but since the rankings are starting to stabalize already it will show you who had the biggest improvement based on where they typically have finished. But note, the only way you can be named Meet Most Valuable Runner is if you are previously ranked. We too often always name the runner that wins the race as the one that had the best race, but we all know XC is a team sport, and it takes 5 to get a team score. I will give it a try, and see if people like it (if I get a lot of complaints about it, I might stop it).
The same athlete can not be name Meet Most Valuable Athlete 2 meets in a row (that they run in).
The rankings are objective. To see how they are computed go to:

Boys - James Beacham from Westminster: James was already ranked #2 in the carroll county rankings, and didn't have very far he could go. But with his victory in this meet, winning by 41 seconds over the 6th ranked runner in the county, he gained a meet high 15 points and moved into 1st place in the county.
Girls - Samantha Bingaman from South Carroll: Samantha started her sophomore season with a strong first meet placing 2nd only behind the Meet Most Valuable Runner from Saturday's invitational (Eastwood). Samantha gained 18 points and leaped from 3rd to 2nd in the county rankings.

Gettysburg Invite Meet Most Valuable Runner
Boys - Nick Pezza from Century: Just as quickly as Nick loses his number 1 ranking he takes it right back. Leading the county at the Gettysburg Invite with his 9th place finish, he gained 18 points in the rankings. It looks like this year's number 1 ranking could be extremely competive and back and forth all year.
Girls - Rachel Larkin from Century: Rachel had a huge day in Pennsylvania, improving her best time from the year by nearly a minute. She gained 21 points in the rankings and moved up one place to 7th overall heading into the big meet at Woodsboro Park (the Mountain Run - 7 of the 8 county teams will be there).
Honorable Mention: Patrick Anske (Century) and Morgan Fa gnant (Century)

Mountain Run Meet Most Valuable Runner
Boys – Zach Hopkins from Winters Mill: With nearly the entire county at the meet, Zach put up not only the fastest time at the meet, but he edged out a few athletes in gaining the most points in the rankings. He gained 22 points from the meet with his 4th place finish. His time was also the 11th best performance by a county athlete all year, despite arguably being the toughest course that has been run on by a county runner this year. Girls – Hannah Oneda from Winters Mill: There is a rule that protects the winner of a race from losing too many points. Typically the winner of the race has a hard time gaining points because they may not have someone pushing them the whole way. Hannah definitely didn’t have anybody pushing her (winning by nearly 2 minutes), but it didn’t stop her from gaining the maximum possible points this week.
Honorable Mention: Greg Rinehart (Liberty) and Casey Sullivan (Liberty)

Girls Nicole Rutherford from Winters Mill: Nicole is making some noise in her first cross country season. After the SC Invite she gained another 20 points in the rankings as the counties #5 runner in the meet. Her move up the rankings may not be done either.

Bull Run Meet Most Valuable Runner
Boys – Nick Pezza from Century: In a week where not a lot of points were earned and only 3 individuals were able to gain more then 10 points in the rankings, Nick was able to gain 16 points in the rankings with his performance in the elite race. He led all county runners with a fastest time of 17:14
Girls – Hannah Oneda from Winters Mill: The first individual to win the Most Valuable Runner for a second time, and why not. She ran the fastest time of the day of any girl in any race in the entire meet. She gained the most points in the rankings, and continues to close in on Maura Linde. The two have yet to face off one one one, but when they do, the number one ranking for the county will be on the line.
Honorable Mention: Ethan March (Westminster) and Jessica Craig (South Carroll)

County Championships Meet Most Valuable Runner
Important Note: Since this is the county championships, by rule we run the athletes through the ranking formula twice. This does not, however, result in twice as many points earned or lost - the second time through the formula has significantly less points earned and lost then the first time through.
Boys - Weston Carvalho from Winters Mill: Westminster's varsity squad had not lost to a county foe all year. So it would take a big step up for anybody take the team title. Weston's efforts, the top effort by an underclassman and top 10 finish, was exactly what Winters Mill needed to take the title. Weston moved up 2 spots in the rankings.
Girls - Tina Graf from South Carroll: Tina was the top freshman finisher in this year's County Championships earning herself All-County Honors. She doubled all other runners in points earned for the county championships and moved up 3 spots in the rankings
Honorable Mention: Reilly Cox (Winters Mill) and Beth Lang (Century)

2A West Regional Championships Meet Most Valuable Runner
Boys - Michael Dunn from Winters Mill: The top freshman in the county came up big for the Falcons again as they won the regional championship. He led the county with 14 points gained in the rankings and moved up 2.
Girls - Erin Larkin from Century: For the second week in a row a freshman wins the honors for the girls, and a freshman sweep for this meet. Erin got a chance to run varsity this week after winning the JV County Championships and she didn't disappoint. She gained 23 points in the rankings, nearly 1/3 of the total points gained by all the girls combined.
Honorable Mention: Kevin Slujtner (Century) and Jill Benko (Winters Mill)

State Championships Meet Most Valuable Runner
Boys - Ryan Spangler from Winters Mill: Ryan's efforts were key in helping the Falcons win a second straight state title. He improved 15 points in the rankings with a spectatular finish to his high school cross country career. Despite missing a large part of the season, he found his best race when it mattered most.
Girls - Maura Linde from Century: She does not get this recognition because she won the state title for the third year in a row (even though she certainly could have). She isn't even getting this recognition because she had the fastest time of any girl in the state (few would argue if I had choosen her for this reason). Maura actually gained the most points of any runner in the rankings, and that is not an easy feat to do when you already have nearly 500 points! She also beat 261 boys that ran at the state meet - nearly 50% of the total boys that ran!
Honorable Mention: Nick Pezza (Century) and Beth Lang (Century)
