I know everyone has a reason why they run. Whether it be they got cut from a team, to stay in shape, or to just play a sport... The point is that everyone does it for some reason and I thought it would be interested to see why everyone got started.

I know I started off as a soccer player, but after a season on our High School team I realized not only did I not like the atmosphere but also how terrible we were. So the next year I did XC.

At first I ran track to stay in shape for soccer, but I liked the people that ran and I stayed with it.
Actually, looking back, the final straw to make me do XC instead of soccer was hearing that our team goes to Hershey Park...kind of funny how that has impacted my life so much.

so my freshman year i tried out for soccer with my friend who never showed up, it turns out he got to the end of his driveway and just turned back around and went home. so anyway after a week of tryouts, like one other kid (who, no offense, turned out to be mentally handicapped) and i got cut. I was told i have no ball control (basically i nicer way then i sucked) so then i went over to XC with the friend who never showed up's brother instead. and like scdistance said the soccer team sucked that year so i just say that i knew the soccer team would be horrible and that is why i started XC. because i wanted to at least do a sport. Now its just because i love it for some reason, I'm not pressured into doing it or anything. i always remember when I'm at the starting line of a race, and its raining and its cold as crap, i always say "I hate this sport, why do i even do it?" and everyone around me agrees with me but i haven't seen anyone quit yet

I think that it is actually hard to quit even if you don't like it because you feel like you should still stay, or maybe you just enjoy hanging out with the cool runnin crowd.

Well...I got cut from soccer freshman year. Then the summer after, my friend Jason Metzler was able to convince me to give XC a shot. I remember my first practice sophomore year. I was horrible, barely ran an 8 minute mile. Then I left for vacation, and came back and it was worse. But my friend kept me in it, and i ended up my season pretty good. Then Junior year, I gave track a chance, and really liked it. So I worked really hard last summer to improve, and it all paid off this year. I had a lot of fun and accomplished most of my goals.
Now I just hope to keep running in my life as a way to stay in shae and relax. I'll probly run a few road races.

i ran xc cus in elementary and middle school for some reason i thought that running the mile was fun i dont know why it was really weird and its not like i ever ran any other time than that or anything its just i thought it was fun to run the mile in gym class. And then in 8th grade i did the all county playday and ran the 2 mile race and came in first and everyone said i should run xc in high school so i started to consider it , especially since i didnt play any other sports. Also i had always seen the liberty team running and it made me want to try it cus it looked fun and they looked like a fun group. so i went out for xc just cus i was like hey ill try it and see what its like. So i went and all the people seemed really cool and i didnt mind the running, cus it was a new challange. i think for about the first week or two i ran as fast as i could everyday cus i was trying to keep up with all the varsity runners. the team made it fun and now i love to run and its a lot of fun and the people that run are definitely one of the best parts about running.

It's not weird to think the mile was fun. I know I thought it was fun.

I hated the mile, and I hated running when I started. I started to stay in shape for soccer and because I used to like watching my sister's track meets. I was terrible when I started (high 2 mins for 800 time trial as a freshmen)but for some reason I thought I might be able to win someday so I kept running. The next off season I trained what I thought to be extremely hard, and then I became about average (2.15 800). Then I only got a couple seconds faster the next two years(2.12). Now, I am in college and back to square one. So basically, I keep running because I am competitive and something makes me think that if I stick with running the results will eventually come.

these are great stories keep em coming + running is a life long sport you have all your life to get better and participate whenever, if you play another high school sport you are pretty much done after college if you make it right?
