WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College junior pole vaulter Jared Lutz is in the intensive care unit of a Baltimore hospital after suffering a head injury late Jan. 31 during an indoor track practice.
Lutz, a Liberty High School graduate, of Eldersburg, had just cleared the bar and landed on the mats. As he attempted to get up, he somehow lost his balance and/or possibly got his foot stuck in a strap and fell, hitting his head.
As of Saturday evening, it is not known whether Lutz will live or die. Doctors say he will likely suffer some brain damage, but it's not known at this point to what degree that will hinder his recovery if he does survive.
In the next 48 hours, longtime McDaniel College groundskeeper Ken Nunnalee and his wife were in a horrific car accident in Westminster. The accident is believed to be weather-related.
The couple remains in Carroll County General Hospital.
