Is it normal to have a splitting headache after these races? When I run well I tend to have a headache and sometimes it lasts for a long time. Just wondering if that's normal.

i think those races tend to take more of a psysical tole on your body. distance is a lot mental and a lot psychical but it is not, as its name means, as fast of a pace. when your running a 400/800 your extending your bodys motions even more: longer strides, faster strides, even quicker breathing, more adrenaline. like i've always said, i think it presents more of a "shock" to your system than distance. That rush you get when you take off at full speed immediately is pretty incredible.

we used to call it a "sprinters headache". We would say that in a sprint you ran harder, sometimes causing your legs to pound into the ground more. Since your running longer then just a 100 or 200, that pounding would result in that headache.
