Is anybody competing in any of the national championships or junior olympics this summer.
Nick Hruch will be trying to qualify for the Junior Olympics. He has never competed in half the events contested (Pole Vault, Discus, Shot Put, Javelin, 100). He has been working with various coaches from the area to try and learn these techniques. I was even told that today was his 3rd day at Pole Vault and cleared 11'0".
No Nick, you can't do Pole Vault next year!

The Excel T&F Club competed in the district AAU meet over the weekend. Our Carroll County athletes represented themselves very well:

Nick had his first day of qualifying for the decathlon. He scratched his first two attempts in long jump, so he had to focus on the board to ensure he got some points. Also scratched in shot put and wasn't able to throw as far as he liked.
First day marks:
100 - 11.71 = 709 points Long Jump - 18'3" = 483 points High Jump - 6'6" (Won) = 785 points 400 - 51.1 (2nd place - hasn't run since states either) = 765 points Shot Put - 33'3" = 494 points
First Day Total = 3238 points
Automatic qualification for junior olympics is 6000 points. Top 2 go on to junior olympics too. He is in 3rd place only 150 points behind the leader. He was 6th going into the hj (which he won) and the 400 (which he took 2nd by just a little bit) so he scored more then everybody in those two events.
He has high hurdles, discus, javelin, pole vault and the 1500 tomorrow. Good luck Nick.

It started at 9 am this morning and goes till 4:30 today. They spread out the 5 events during the day, but their is no set schedule for them.
I am hoping to get updates, and if I do I will post them. But I am only here at work for another 2 hours, so I don't know what I will hear.

I just got home from the meet. Pretty much the most poorly run meet ever. Nick was in third or foutrth place going into the final event of the day (1500). Top 2 make it with a 3rd qualifying if they hit 6073 points. He was iffy on the point total and had to make sure he got into at least second. Anyway, after 9 events he somehow gutted out a 4:32 1500 (about a 4:49 1600) winning by 25 seconds and beating the first place guy by 34 seconds he qualified for sure, but when i left they hadn't yet posted whether he won or not (it was that close). I heard one coach say he won by 4 and another say he lost by nine. It was pretty crazy. I was supposed to run the 800 at 4 and ended up running at 10 which pretty much threw everyone off. I ran either 2:00 or 2:01 according to watches at the finish.
Way to go Nick!

Nick said he did 10'6" in Pole Vault. He also said he did 4:30 in the 1500, won by 200 meters, and lost by only 9 points. Not bad for someone that hasn't run in 4 weeks. Should do much better at Nationals in a month when he has some running under his belt, and if his ankle is better.
Not bad for someone that had never competed in 5 of the events, in one of the events he had done before he scratched twice and had to take a much worse mark then usual to be careful, and for not running for 4 weeks leading in. should be interesting in a month.
