I am going to try and compile some info on 2A West here. I am starting with 2A West because it is the easiest region Carroll County is in to find info. The other regions will be more difficult, but I will try to make an attempt at them (because of mocorunning, fredco running, carroll county running and high school sports, I am able to get info on every team in 2a West). I will try to get up all sorts of stuff on here, and will continue to update them (which means I won't necessarily create a new post, but just modify old post). Teams A list of when teams had complete teams Team | Boys | Girls | Century | 9/9, 9/12, 9/17, 9/20, 9/22, 10/7, 10/17, 10/23 | 9/9, 9/12, 9/17, 9/20, 9/22, 10/7, 10/17, 10/23 | Clarksburg | 9/9, 9/13, 9/16, 9/23, 10/4, 10/7, 10/18 | 9/9, 9/13, 9/16, 9/23, 10/4, 10/7, 10/18 | FSK | 9/6, 9/9, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | Incomplete | Liberty | 9/6, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | 9/6, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | Middletown | 9/8, 9/17, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | 9/17, 10/4, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | North Hagerstown | 9/8, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/25 | 9/8, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/17, 10/25 | Northwood | 9/11, 9/16, 9/20, 9/23, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/18 | 9/11, 9/16, 9/23, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/18 | Rockville | 9/10, 9/13, 9/16, 9/23, 10/7, 10/11, 10/18 | 9/10, 9/13, 9/16, 9/23, 10/11, 10/18 | South Hagerstown | 9/8, 9/13, 9/17, 10/17, 10/25 | | Walkersville | 9/8, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 9/22, 9/26, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | 9/8, 9/13, 9/17, 9/20, 9/22, 9/26, 10/4, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | Winters Mill | 9/6, 9/13, 9/17, 10/1, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 | 9/6, 9/13, 9/17, 10/1, 10/7, 10/11, 10/17, 10/23 |
Every boys team has had a complete team in at least one meet, which means that 6 teams will qualify for states from 2A West.

I went back and did the same for North Hagerstown for the Mountain Run when somebody emailed me and suggested I do the same. North Hagerstown ran their varsity team in the JV race as a workout. No varsity North Hagerstown girls ran in the varsity race, and the only boy from North Hagerstown that ran in the varsity race that has been varsity all year is Bob Hardinge who is their #6 man.

I thought this was noteworthy.
Right now, it seems like the Winters Mill boys and Century girls are the teams to beat in 2a West. But there is another team to watch. I'm not saying they will challenge the Century girls, but they are definitely getting stronger.
The North Hagerstown girls showed at Brunswick and SC that they had a strong top 3 in Allison Harrell, Taryn Shank and Josie Smith. At Brunswick they put their top 3 in the top 21. At first glance I thought North Hagerstown, Clarksburg and the Liberty girls were going to be in a good battle at regionals (possibly adding Middletown too, haven't seen enough of them to know what they got), but North keeps getting stronger. In a close meet at Brunswick they nipped Liberty by 9 points. At SC they ran real strong and got Liberty by 52.
This weekend North Hagerstown I thought looked even stronger. Their #1 from last year, Brooke Pettner, was struggling to start (she finished 54th at Brunswick - #7 on the team). This weekend she was #3 on her team, running the 12th fastest time in the region thus far this year (Carlisle is a very flat 5K course though). Adding to that was a freshman for North that finished 4th on the team with the 17th fastest time in the region so far this year. Josie Smith, their #3 runner at both Brunswick and SC , didn't run poorly but was #5 on their team with a personal PR for the year.
Granted, it is hard to tell how fast this course was that they ran this weekend. And with them running against all Pennsylvania schools it is hard to gauge their performance, but it would seem that both Pettner and Martin have made their top 5 a tighter pack. They now have 5 girls in the top 20 in the region with their performances, and regardless of how fast the course is, it does make one take notice.
I think it makes this region that much stronger, and it should be even more exciting once regionals comes. Still don't know much about Clarksburg or Middletown (girls) yet, but it looks like 6 or 7 girls teams could be fighting for those 5 spots for states.

Their boys' team is also much improved from last year. I don't know if they have a shot at qualifying for States this year as a team, but they had a couple individuals in the top-15 at Brunswich in the large-school division. I definitely think they may make a little noise at MVALs... Their new coach has really put it together this year.

Once again, Carroll County has a freshman boy that is making some noise.
Zach Hopkins from Winters Mill just made his way into both the Carroll County top 20 times and the 2a West top 20 times. He ran the 14th fastest 5K converted time for the year in 2a West. He certainly seems to be making Winters Mill and even stronger team.

OK, strictly on numbers, this is where I see everybody stands in the region going in - assuming everybody is healthy.
I will start with the girls:
Top 5 teams will qualify for states. Team Standings:
1) Century: They are 14-0 vs the region. Only 2a loss this year was to River Hill at the beginning of the season. So strong, I think they might be able to run their JV team and still qualify. A lot of depth and they have a couple runners that can win races.
2) North Hagerstown: They are 15-0 vs any Region teams not named Century.
3) Winters Mill: They are 7-1 vs region besides Century and North Hagerstown. Only loss was to Liberty when they were missing their #1 runner. They are 4-1 vs Liberty this year.
4) Liberty: 8-0 vs teams other then top 3 in region. Beat Winters Mill at MVALs. they are 2-0 vs Middletown (Keyser and Mountain Run) and beat Clarksburg in only meeting at Keyser.
Two teams fighting for last spot potentially:
Middletown - beat Clarksburg at Keyser by 10 points. Lost to Liberty by 86 points at Keyser and 46 points at Mountain Run.
Clarksburg - lost to Middletown by only 10 points. Very limited meets against bulk of 2a West Teams. May have been missing a runner or two at Keyser Invite in only meeting against Liberty and Middletown.
There is a considerable gap to the next team in the region, which my best guess would be Walkersville, but Rockville might be close to them. Northwood would round out the teams (South Hagerstown and FSK are incomplete) Walkersville did get to within 12 points of Middletown at Counties, but the week before they lost to Middletown by 34 points, lost to them at Keyser by 106 points and lost to them at Mountain run by 41 points.

On the boys:
Top 6 teams will qualify for states, and there seems to be a lot more competitions for each place on the boys side:
Team Standings:
1) Winters Mill: They are 19-0 vs this region and have only lost once to any 2a Team all year (Mount Hebron at Lion's Den).
Next 4 places could be real tight
2) Walkersville: They are 21-2 vs. Region besides Winters Mill. Only loss was to Middletown & FSK at Mountain Run, but beat them at both MVALs and Counties and is 3-1 overall vs them this year.
3) Middletown: They are 14-0 vs Region besides top two teams above. They have only run against Century once - at Mountain Run, but have beaten FSK twice.
4) Century: They are 13-1 vs Region besides top 3 teams. Have yet to beat Walkersville or Middletown but are 4-1 vs FSK (including beating them the last 4 meetings).
5) FSK: They are 9-0 vs Region besides top 4 teams. Beat Century & Walkersville at Mountain Run. Still a considerable gap to the 6th ranked team in region, and can compete for 2nd in region.
Next spot is the last spot for states, and there could be competition here. Three teams have a shot at it:
Liberty: Only time they have lost to Clarksburg or North Hagerstown was when they were missing their #2 runner for SATs. But it was there only meeting with Clarksburg, and unknown if they were missing anybody for SATs too. In two other meetings with North Hagerstown they have beaten them decisively by 80 points (Brunswick) and 72 points (SC).
North Hagerstown: Did beat Liberty by 46 points at Keyser. How much would have Liberty's #2 made up. North Hagerstown has seemed to get stronger as the season has gone on.
Clarksburg: The biggest question mark going into regionals because they have only seen the bulk of the county at the Keyser Invite when many teams were missing athletes due to SATs. They beat Liberty by 4 points there, so they are at least going to be a factor.
There is a considerable gap to the remaining teams in the region. Clarksburg beat Northwood by 77 points at Counties, and Rockville by 207 points. South Hagerstown has not beaten any team in the region, including losing to North Hagerstown half a dozen times.

Excellent preview, coach. With the girls, Middletown was missing their #1 for Counties which might have given them more breathing room over the fifth-place team (Walkersville). But the Walkersville girls are starting to come on a little bit. If (and that's a big IF) South Hagerstown submits a full roster for Regions (and they submitted one for Mountain Run), that should bump another girls' team to States. I was told that so long as a team submitted a full team for Regions, that would count as far as number of teams entered. If that is the case and 2A West can send six girls teams to States, Walkersville has a fighting chance.
The boys' race is going to be tight. Winters Mill is the clear favorite, but it's going to come down to the final straight-away between Century, FSK, Walkersville, and Middletown. Zynda and Pezza from Century looked good at MVALs, as did the Haufler twins from FSK. I'm not sure what happened to Middletown at Counties, but don't expect them to let that let-down affect them any. Clarksburg has a good runner in Jatin Narang, and I think their #2 guy is somewhat decent so they might make some noise for that sixth and final spot, but I don't think they can overcome Liberty.
