FOXSports.com's Jamie Trecker reports that French players told French media members that Materazzi used a racial slur which prompted the headbutt.

It doesn't matter what that guy said, you don't head butt someone. And given what he did, I wouldn't believe them anyways. He is known for doing things like that, and he really messed up his final game. If you noticed in the game, when the first showed him after the incident, before the ref gave him the card, he started to take off his captains band. He knew he was going to get thrown out for it (my question is, why did he end up argueing about it then, for theotrics). Given his history, I don't believe that whatever the Italian player said it warented anything at all.

I'd imagine that it would hurt a ton. I know it hurts when your just fulling around with your friends and someone gives you a "chest tap", so a head butt in the same spot has to be a killer.

The U.S. might have had a bad showing, but we tied the world champs. I think we were the only team they played that they didn't defeat.

Yesterday on the news I heard the Head Butt was provoked by the other team making comments about his family. Zidane also mentioned that he was not sorry for what he did, just sorry that young children might have seen it.
As for kman's post on the USA. We were the only team that did not lose to Italy.

Yeah, but we also outplayed Italy that day and only came out with a draw. that was the best game we played all tournament, and it was the worst they played.
Zidane, the guy that headbutted someone, and is known for acts like that cause he lost his head. The other guy, who isn't known for things like that, said he would never say something about his family, that in fact he lost his mother when he was 15 and it is still an emotional spot for him. He knew about the situation with Zidane's mother, and wouldn't go there. So who are you going to believe, a guy known for blowing up at times (recall him stomping on a player for no apparent reason in another world cup) who obviously doesn't like this other guy and would say anything to try and save his face, or the other guy that isn't known for such acts.

Well a tie is a tie!
As for the whole Zidane thing, I think I would have to believe the other guy.
